2022 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie (Alain Coudert)

"The 2022 Clos de la Roilette “regular bottling” is truly exceptional in this vintage. The bouquet is deep, pure and sappy, wafting from the glass in a mix of sweet cassis, black plums, dark chocolate, gamebird, dark soil tones, violets, a touch of brown spices and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, focused and full-bodied, with bottomless depth of sappy black fruit at the core, superb soil signature and grip, ripe tannins and a very long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. This has a lovely veneer of puppy fat right now that makes it easy to drink (despite a fair bit of tannin), but it really deserves at least a few years in the cellar to allow more complexity to emerge with bottle age. It si a great young vintage of Clos de la Roilette. 2027- 2065. "

100% Gamay. From vines around 40 years old and up, on heavy clay soils with relatively little granite and quite a lot of the iron-like mineral manganese. The farming is sustainable or lutte raisonnée. All vineyard work is by hand; the soils are worked only superficially, at most twice per year, to protect the roots of the older vines. Vinification is traditional, semi-carbonic Beaujolais style. The whole clusters are harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in open-top concrete tank. Maceration lasts around 14 days for this Fleurie, with a submerged cap rather than punchdowns. Sulfur use is quite minimal. The wine is aged in large, old oak foudres for about 9 months before bottling.
