Domaine Joseph Roty is one of the great houses of Gevrey Chambertin. Operated by the Roty family since 1710, they have achieved greatness working with true old vines. Their most famous site, a section of Charmes Chambertin, was grafted in 1881. This ancient vineyard was among the first to be grafted after phylloxera wiped out half of France's vines. The cuvée is aptly labeled "Très Vieilles Vignes," or very old vines.
Tasting Note
"Aromas of ripe cherries and cassis mingled with notions of licorice, anise, sweet spices, dark chocolate and peonies introduce the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes, a full-bodied, layered and concentrated wine that's rich and velvety, with a broad-shouldered, textural profile and a long, resonant finish. Framed by beautifully ripe, powdery tannins, it's an especially sensual rendition of this perennially great wine."
