Tasting Notes

Aromas of black cherry, blackberry, tobacco, gravel, spice, and incense lead the nose. The palate is concentrated and energetic, with dark fruit, firm tannins, and a long, savory mineral-driven finish.

Wine Details / Description

Sandlands focuses on old-vine California vineyards and heritage varieties, producing wines that reflect site, farming, and restraint. This Contra Costa Mataro is made from 100% Mataro, also known as Mourvèdre, sourced from Oakley Road Vineyard, planted in the 1920s in sandy decomposed granite soils.

The 2024 vintage is produced in very small quantities, with only five barrels made. At 13.6% alcohol, it balances depth and freshness, offering a serious, age-worthy expression of Contra Costa's historic old vines.
