2023 Gérard Boulay Sancerre Chavignol La Côte

Among the handful of bottles capable of changing someone's opinion of Sancerre, Gérard Boulay's 2023 La Côte sits near the very top of the list. Sourced from the famed La Grande Côte vineyard in Chavignol, this is Sauvignon Blanc with unusual depth and palate presence. La Côte unfolds with waves of citrus, white orchard fruit, chalk, and crushed limestone, carrying a richness that never comes at the expense of precision.

Boulay farms some of Chavignol's steepest Kimmeridgian limestone slopes entirely by hand, and his wines belong in the same conversation as those of François and Pascal Cotat and Edmond Vatan. While the 2023 La Côte already flashes today in the glass, this is also one of the Loire's best wines to cellar. The evolution after 10 years transforms it completely, adding notes of honey, smoke, ginger, and dried citrus while preserving the salinity that makes great Chavignol so captivating –– it never becomes heavy or cloying despite the rich layers that develop. For collectors who love Sauvignon Blanc with real substance and longevity, few bottles deliver at this level.
