One benefit of importing the legendary Koehler-Ruprecht wines into California is finally getting my hands on their extra-special rosé. While New York has had its fair share, California has not. Until now. I'm giddy to have access to this pink that has alluded my grasp.
Comprised of Pinot Noir grown organically on limestone, this clocks in at 12% alcohol and comes in the perfect chiseled frame for the watershed 2019 German vintage. Fermented in 2,500L stück casks with malolactic fermentation blocked to harness the natural energy of the vintage.
Magical adequately sums up the Koehler-Ruprecht estate in Germany's Pfalz region. The wines bear little resemblance to those of neighboring producers, nor those next door in France's Alsace. Though Riesling is the focus here, a super-natural element exists within all of their wines that make them stand out among their contemporaries. These are some of the very most fascinating wines on earth, and it's the extreme hands-off approach here that's mostly responsible for that unique quality.
