Old World-inspired Syrah has long been a staple in our US selection. Today’s list features trailblazing names that are crafting California Syrah in the same vein as the traditional icons of the Northern Rhône. No doubt, American winemaking methods in the vineyard and cellar have been informed by countless trips to the original source.
Minerality, earth, and floral notes take more emphasis here, and the fruit spectrum is in that fresh and crispy phase versus candied. Many of these also include very high whole-cluster amounts for fermentation, doubling down on the inherent savory and spicy side to Syrah. And like their French friends, they overwhelmingly choose neutral wood for aging to preserve freshness of fruit!
