There are four main farmers in Vosne-Romanée who young vignerons look up to as models: Lalou Bize-Leroy, Jean Yves Bizot, Pascal Mugneret, and most recently, Charles Lachaux of Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux. Lalou has become a mentor to Charles, and she’s much of the inspiration behind his practices.
Max Kogod met Charles Lachaux while working in Burgundy in 2012, the same year Charles took over winemaking from his father at Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux. He was more pensive than most of the young winemakers that Max had met and unafraid to challenge conventional wisdom.
Charles introduced whole-cluster to the Arnoux-Lachaux wines and, later, biodynamic farming to their 14.5 ha spread throughout the Côte de Nuits. Now, his vines sprawl freely, trained into long arches rather than trimmed—a practice pioneered by Lalou.
While Vosne-Romanée is famously known for its exotic-spiced Pinot Noirs, this new project was inspired by Lalou’s d'Auvenay Aligoté. Arnoux-Lachaux owns a parcel of old-vine Aligoté planted as far back as the 1930s, but until now, they had sold the fruit. For the Pinot Noirs, Charles purchases fruit from young growers willing to work to his meticulous standards. It's all about farming with just a slight touch of winemaking: 100% whole cluster, short fermentations, delicate extractions, and no new oak.
