“There are three barrels of the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin En Reniard, a pretty wine that exhibits aromas of cherries, plums and sweet forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, succulent and fleshy, it's open-knit and charming, with a delicate core of fruit.”

- William Kelley of The Wine Advocate

We’re told that there are four main farmers in Vosne-Romanée who young vignerons look up to as models: Lalou Bize-Leroy, Jean Yves Bizot, Pascal Mugneret, and most recently, Charles Lachaux of Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux. Lalou has become a mentor to Charles, and she’s much of the inspiration behind his practices.

Today, we’re thrilled to offer the first release of a new project from Charles Lachaux—what also marks a second endeavor for Kogod Wine Merchant. We’re the importer for these wines in California!

Max met Charles while working in Burgundy in 2012, the same year Charles took over winemaking from his father at Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux. They were introduced by a mutual friend who was working at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti just down the road. He was more pensive and introspective than most of the young winemakers that Max had met; he seemed determined to make the best wine and unafraid to challenge conventional wisdom.

Charles introduced whole-cluster to the Arnoux-Lachaux wines and, later, biodynamic farming to their 14.5 ha spread throughout the Côte de Nuits. Now, their vines sprawl freely, trained into long arches rather than trimmed—a practice pioneered by Lalou. It’s organized chaos, which, if you’re a vine, makes for compelling wines.

While Vosne-Romanée is famously known for its exotic-spiced pinot noirs, Charles’ new project was inspired by Lalou’s aligoté at Domaine d'Auvenay. Arnoux-Lachaux owns a parcel of old-vine aligoté planted as far back as the 1930s, but until now, they had sold the fruit. For the Pinot Noirs, Charles purchases fruit from young growers willing to work to his meticulous standards. Really, it’s all about farming with just a slight touch of winemaking: 100% whole cluster, short fermentations, delicate extractions, and no new oak.

If you’ve asked yourself what Vosne-Romanée would taste like in the hands of a young, inquisitive vigneron, these wines will begin to take you there. They have a vin de soif-esque freshness and approachability without compromising depth or elegance. It’s heartening to know that producers like Charles exist in this famed village, turning tradition on its head to reconsider what else Burgundy can be.
