Steve Matthiasson, a farmer turned viticulturist turned winemaker, is one of the leading figures in the wave following Robert Parker’s era of high-octane wines. Jon Bonné's The New California Wine (2013) canoned Matthiasson and his peers as the next generation of winemakers focused on balance and the unique expressions of California terroir.
Matthiasson’s take on a balanced and age-worthy Bordeaux style red blend. It’s mostly Merlot from Red Hen Vineyard, a 70-year-old historic site in Oak Knoll District that Steve rediscovered in 2003. Aged in 50% new French oak.
