Sam and Jessica Bilbro of Idlewild are front and center in what Jon Bonné has appropriately dubbed, "The New California". Their whole portfolio of wines are highlighted by balance and bright flavors that are an absolute joy to drink. Focused on vineyards in Mendocino, they have a particular passion for Italian grape varieties. Here we feature their excellent Fox Hill Vineyard Cortese. Cortese is the grape used to produce wines from Gavi in the Piedmont region of Italy. Their interpretation of the grape is actually quite reminiscent of a cross between Loire Valley Chenin Blanc, and a Northern Rhone Valley white blend. While on one hand this wine has substantial weight, texture and ripeness, it's also perfectly juxtaposed (thanks to a portion of stainless steel aging, and particular vineyard management) with a fresh, lean and mineral-driven finish that leaves you wanting more, and more.
